Socialise and exercise at the same time. Go out walking with a friend whose fitness and stamina levels are the same as your or similar and keep pace. The time will pass really quickly and you'll have that competition to keep you on your toes.

Here's another tip

People often ask how to build up their fitness when walking and this is a good one.

After you've been walking for a while and are warmed up, pick a hill and walk up it at a brisk pace. How hard or easy was that? Did you make it? If you can, don't stop but do take time to reflect when you get there. Could you do another circuit and include the hill again?

Listen to your body and if you feel fine then include it a couple of times and as your walking continues, include the hill. Once you're finding it very easy, pick a longer or steeper one and go through the same process.

You don't need one as steep as the one in the photo but then that's something to aspire to as your fitness levels improve!!

Walking briskly for only 10 mins several times a day is just as beneficial for you as doing 30 mins once a day. For many of us these, small bouts of exercise may be easier to fit into our busy schedules.

Pedometer linked Walking Tip

Try wearing a pedometer, it will make you walk more. Testers, researchers and I all agree. And did you know that last year 2 million pedometers were sold in the UK, makingh them one of the 10 most popular Christmas pressies.

And if I can recommend, my favourite pedometer is made by Silva who are a swedish company. http://www.silva.se/en/System/Silva-News-April-2009/Silva-pedometers-best-in-test/They are very accurate and can be found at most good outdoor shops and if, in London at Stamfords in Long Acre Covent Garden. If you go in there and like travel, be prepared to spend lots of time there or lots of money or both. Fabulous books and maps, definitely a place to dream.
